Riquímbili o El mundo de Nelsito [Riquimbili or Nelsito’s World] is a 2022 feature film by Fernando Pérez (Cuba), written by Fernando Pérez and Abel Rodríguez. It is one of the Caribbean films nominated for the 96th Academy Awards.
Description: Nelsito, a 16-year-old autistic boy, runs away from home but is the victim of a car accident. While everyone is worried about him, from his stretcher and through his imaginary pen, Nelsito reveals to us the dark and hidden side of all those around him—perverse children, murderous women, adorable scam girls. He records every detail of his imagination. Once recovered, Nelsito will be received by his characters—now mere neighbors… real, everyday people. But which are the authentic ones: the common mortals or the ones he has imagined?
Fernando Pérez: One of Cuba’s most acclaimed filmmakers, Fernando PÉREZ (1944, Havana, Cuba), studied Language and Spanish Literature at the University of Havana. He worked with the ICAIC (Cuban Art and Film Institute) and subsequently as an assistant director. Pérez has made films (mainly documentaries) since 1975, but it was not until Madagascar (1994) that he gained significant international recognition.
